You Don't Have to Go Far

One of the things we didn't fully appreciate about Ojochal until spending time here is just how much of Costa Rica is right outside the door.

Waterfalls, beaches, jungle, wildlife and the Pacific are all within easy reach.

Some experiences are right here in Ojochal. Others are a short drive north or south along the Costa Ballena.

That's one of the reasons Ojochal makes such a great base for exploring this part of Costa Rica.

Start Close to Home

1. Visit Ojochal Waterfall

Ojochal Waterfall is roughly ¼ mile from Casa Cascada, with additional distance depending on the route and access point. That's not a marketing line — it's one of the things we genuinely love about where the villa sits.

No long day trip. No driving across the country. A tropical waterfall practically in the neighborhood is a real differentiator, and it's part of what sold us on this particular piece of jungle.

A note on precision, because we'd rather be accurate than impressive: trail conditions and actual walking distance can vary. Walking directions and access details are shared with confirmed guests once the route is verified.

See Ojochal Waterfall

We filmed this at Ojochal Waterfall — roughly ¼ mile to the park entrance and another 500 feet in from there. Turn up the sound and you'll get a little taste of what it's like to stand there with the jungle and rushing water around you.

Footwear: conditions around tropical waterfalls can be wet and slippery. Weather: rain can change trail and water conditions quickly. Bring: water, and something to protect your phone or camera.

2. Explore the Sea Caves at Playa Ventanas

Playa Ventanas is one of the area's signature beaches, and it's easy to see why. “Ventanas” means windows — and when conditions allow, you can experience the dramatic caves carved through the coastal rock where the jungle meets the Pacific.

Palm trees. Warm Pacific water. Jungle-covered cliffs. And it's only a short drive from Casa Cascada.

Note: cave access depends on tide and surf conditions. Never enter the caves during unsafe conditions.

Where the Ocean Takes Over

3. Visit Marino Ballena and the Whale Tail

A short drive north puts you in Uvita, home to Marino Ballena National Park and the famous Whale Tail — a natural sandbar formation extending out into the Pacific that genuinely looks like a whale's tail from above.

Walk the beach, explore the coastline, and if you're visiting during whale season, keep an eye on the horizon. This is one of the landscapes that defines Costa Ballena, and it's easy to combine with lunch or an afternoon in Uvita.

Head South

4. Explore the Sierpe River & Mangroves

Head south instead of north and Ojochal's other advantage shows up: the Sierpe-Térraba wetlands, and beyond them, the wild Osa region.

Slow everything down, board a boat and enter the mangroves. It's an extraordinary change of pace from beaches and waterfalls — a different environment entirely, with birds, crocodiles and, if you're lucky, monkeys moving through the trees along the banks.

North takes you toward Uvita and Dominical. South takes you toward Sierpe and the Osa Peninsula. That range is part of why we love this stretch of coast — and it's exactly what this video captures, filmed during one of our trips through the Sierpe mangroves.

Look Up

5. Watch for Wildlife Everywhere

Sometimes you don't have to go looking for wildlife. Sometimes it comes to you.

Toucans, scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, geckos and butterflies all move through this part of Costa Rica, and Casa Cascada's jungle setting means sightings happen right on the property, not just on organized tours. We can't guarantee what you'll see on any given day — but this is one of our own, filmed right at Casa Cascada.

Waterfalls, beaches, wildlife and the Osa — all from one base.

Ojochal doesn't have one famous attraction. It has a location. Head north and you're toward Uvita and Dominical. Head south and you're toward Sierpe and the Osa. And some days, you don't go anywhere at all.

Take the Coast North

6. Spend an Afternoon in Dominical

Dominical has a different energy than Ojochal — a laid-back surf-town atmosphere with a long beach, casual restaurants and beachfront shops.

It's an easy change of pace: a morning of surfing or beach time, lunch somewhere open-air, and a scenic drive back down the coast to Ojochal for the evening.

Another Waterfall Day

7. Visit Uvita Waterfall

Ojochal Waterfall is close and intimate. Uvita Waterfall is a different kind of experience — a popular freshwater swimming spot with natural pools, a short drive inland from Uvita.

Depending on current access, you may also find a butterfly garden and places for food nearby, which makes this an easy 2–3 hour adventure to combine with lunch in Uvita.

Note: conditions and water levels change — we don't recommend jumping or sliding from the waterfall.

Take the Long Way

8. Drive the Costa Ballena

Not every good day here needs a destination. Some of our favorite afternoons have simply been driving — Pacific coastline on one side, jungle-covered mountains on the other, small towns and roadside sodas along the way.

Ocean overlooks appear where you don't expect them. So do beaches, waterfalls signs, and the occasional troop of monkeys crossing overhead. Costa Ballena rewards exploring without a rigid itinerary.

Seriously

9. Do Absolutely Nothing

Not every vacation day needs an itinerary.

Morning coffee on the terrace. Jungle sounds. Howler monkeys somewhere in the distance. A swim. A book. An afternoon tropical rain rolling through. Sunset over the Pacific.

We've just walked you through waterfalls, beaches, mangroves, wildlife and coastal towns. Sometimes one of the best things to do in Ojochal is simply be in Ojochal.

Our Take

This Is Why We Chose Ojochal.

The point isn't that Ojochal has one famous attraction. It's where it sits.

Head north and you're toward Uvita and Dominical. Head south and you're toward Sierpe and the Osa. Drive down the hill and you're at the Pacific. And remarkably, Ojochal Waterfall is approximately ¼ mile from Casa Cascada.

Then there are days when you don't have to go anywhere at all.

That's what surprised us about Ojochal — and it's one of the reasons we've come to love it.
