Two incredible Costa Rican destinations. Two very different experiences. And close enough that you don't really have to choose.

If you're planning a trip to Costa Rica's spectacular South Pacific coast, there's a good chance you'll eventually ask yourself: should we stay in Uvita or Ojochal?

We've spent enough time exploring both to have a pretty simple answer.

Visit Uvita. Stay in Ojochal.

That's not a knock on Uvita. Quite the opposite.

Uvita is one of the places you'll absolutely want to experience while you're here. But Ojochal offers something different: a quieter jungle setting, beautiful ocean views, incredible restaurants and a location that makes it an outstanding home base for exploring Costa Ballena and Costa Rica's South Pacific.

And that's exactly where the story gets interesting.

Location, Location...and Rainforest

The rainforest-covered mountains surrounding Ojochal tumble toward Costa Rica's South Pacific coast.

Pull up a map of Costa Ballena and you'll quickly understand one of the things we love most about Ojochal.

Travel north and you'll reach:

Osa Peninsula

Ojochal's location makes a huge difference when you're trying to experience more than just one Costa Rican beach town.

One morning you can head north toward Uvita and Marino Ballena National Park. Continue farther north and you reach Dominical with its surfing and laid-back beach-town atmosphere.

Head south and an entirely different adventure begins toward Sierpe and the wild landscapes of the Osa Peninsula.

Then you return home to the rainforest.

Why You Should Absolutely Visit Uvita

Marino Ballena National Park and the famous Whale's Tail are among the signature experiences of Costa Ballena.

Uvita deserves its reputation as the hub of Costa Ballena.

It's where you'll find supermarkets, banks, shops and services along with access to one of the region's signature attractions: Marino Ballena National Park and the famous Whale's Tail.

Uvita is also one of the region's centers for whale-watching excursions and ocean adventures.

Spend a day there. Walk the beach. See the Whale's Tail. Take a whale-watching trip. Grab lunch. Explore.

We do.

But at the end of the day, we like heading back south.

Then You Arrive in Ojochal

This is the other side of Costa Ballena—the quiet rainforest hills surrounding Ojochal.

There's a noticeable change as you leave Uvita and continue south.

Things begin to feel quieter. Greener. More spread out.

Turn off the Costanera into Ojochal and the roads begin winding into tropical hills covered in dense vegetation.

Homes disappear into the rainforest.

Toucans and scarlet macaws aren't decorations on tourist signs anymore. They're flying overhead.

Howler monkeys may become your morning alarm clock.

And depending on where you're staying, the Pacific suddenly appears through the mountains and jungle.

That's exactly what we wanted.

Ojochal's Secret Weapon: The Food

For such a small rainforest community, Ojochal's restaurant scene is extraordinary.

Here's the part that surprises first-time visitors.

Ojochal is a serious food destination.

For such a small community, the concentration of excellent restaurants is remarkable.

You'll find Costa Rican cuisine alongside French influences, Asian flavors, seafood, international fusion, bakeries and upscale dining—sometimes hidden down roads where you wouldn't expect to find a restaurant at all.

That's one of the things we love most about Ojochal.

Spend the day exploring waterfalls and beaches. Come home. Jump in the pool. Watch the sky change over the Pacific. Then drive a few minutes down the mountain for an incredible dinner.

That's a pretty good day in Costa Rica.

And Then There's Playa Ventanas

A quiet sandy cove at Playa Ventanas framed by palm trees and jungle-covered headlands
Playa Ventanas and its famous sea caves—one of our favorite beaches near Ojochal.

This is one of those places where photographs almost don't look real.

Playa Ventanas is famous for the dramatic sea caves carved through the rocky headlands.

It's tropical Costa Rica concentrated into one scene: rainforest, palm trees, Pacific Ocean, sand, sea caves.

And it's right here in our part of Costa Ballena.

This is exactly why we don't think of Ojochal as being "away from everything."

You're surrounded by it.

Go North: Spend a Day in Dominical

Dominical brings a completely different personality to Costa Ballena—surf, beach and a laid-back coastal vibe.

Continue north beyond Uvita and you reach another Costa Ballena favorite: Dominical.

Dominical is the surf-town personality of the region.

It's relaxed, casual and unmistakably coastal. Surfing is a huge part of the culture, and the town has restaurants, shops and places to grab a drink near the beach.

That's the beauty of staying in this region.

You don't have to choose just one town.

Have breakfast in Ojochal. Explore Uvita. Spend the afternoon in Dominical. Then come home.

Go South: Sierpe and the Osa

A crocodile resting on the muddy bank among the mangroves of the Sierpe-Térraba wetlands
Head south from Ojochal toward Sierpe and you're approaching one of Costa Rica's wildest regions.

One of Ojochal's most overlooked advantages is what lies in the other direction. South.

Head toward Sierpe and you're approaching the rivers, mangroves, wetlands and extraordinary biodiversity of southern Costa Rica.

Sierpe is also an important jumping-off point for adventures farther into the Osa region.

That's why we think Ojochal's location is so special.

Ojochal vs. Uvita: Which Is Better?

Both. Seriously.

They're different enough that we don't think one needs to beat the other.

Choose Uvita if...

You want to be close to the area's commercial center, supermarkets, shops, services and Marino Ballena National Park.

Choose Ojochal if...

You're looking for rainforest, wildlife, privacy, beautiful views, a slower atmosphere and an exceptional dining scene—while keeping Uvita and the rest of Costa Ballena within easy reach.

For us, the choice was Ojochal.

Why We Chose Ojochal

Our favorite part of exploring Costa Ballena? Coming home.

We didn't choose Ojochal because we wanted to get away from Uvita.

We chose it because we wanted access to all of it.

We wanted to wake up surrounded by rainforest. We wanted ocean views. We wanted wildlife. We wanted restaurants nearby. We wanted waterfalls and beaches. We wanted to be able to head north toward Uvita and Dominical or south toward Sierpe.

But most importantly, when the exploring was finished, we wanted somewhere that felt like home.

That's what we found in Ojochal.

And eventually, that's what led us to Casa Cascada.

Stay in Ojochal at Casa Cascada

Casa Cascada — Where the Rainforest Meets the Ocean.

Imagine waking up in the Costa Rican rainforest and having one big decision to make over morning coffee: what should we do today?

Walk to the nearby waterfall? Explore Playa Ventanas? Head into Uvita? Spend the afternoon in Dominical? Drive south toward Sierpe? Try another Ojochal restaurant?

Or... do absolutely nothing.

Stay home. Swim. Relax in the jacuzzi. Watch the toucans. Listen for the howler monkeys. Sit beneath the covered terrace and look toward the Pacific.

Casa Cascada is a four-bedroom private villa tucked into the hills of Ojochal, surrounded by tropical nature with a private pool, jacuzzi, expansive outdoor living space and Pacific views.

It's our home base for exploring Costa Ballena.

And when we're not here, we'd love for it to become yours.
